Commercial Auto Underwriting Guidelines

Everything you need to get up to speed and submit your clients for coverage

Commercial auto is currently available in the following states: Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

Coverages/limits available:

  • Symbols 7, 8, and 9
  • Symbol 1 available on a case-by-case basis
  • Primary Liability from $100k CSL to $1M CSL
  • UM/UIM/UMPD
  • Med pay with options at $1,000/$2,000/$5,000
  • Comp/Collision with deductible options at
  • $500/$1,000/$5,000
  • Additional coverages include: roadside, rental reimbursement, Pie signature broadened coverage, OEM parts, Customized equipment, blanket AI (with primary non-contributory), and blanket WOS
  • Paid-in-full discounts available

Typical business classes and vehicles

  • Artisan contractors (e.g. plumbers), land services (e.g. landscapers), services (e.g. realtors, attorneys, consultants)
  • Pickups, cargo vans, SUVs, box trucks, flatbed trucks, dump trucks (landscapers and contractors only)

Driver scoring

  • Individual driving filings (e.g. SR22) not available
  • No major violations within the prior 36 months
  • Policy level modification will be applied based on driver activity
  • Policy level modification available if customer provides vehicle telematics data access
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license required

Submission requirements

Needed for indication (non-bindable)

  • Vehicle information (VIN preferred, year/make/model acceptable)
  • Coverage and limit selections
  • Garaging zip code
  • Class of business (description of operations)
  • Driver information (name, age)

Needed for final quote (bindable), all of the above plus:

  • Driver details – date of birth and driver’s license number
  • Vehicle details – VIN
  • Prior claims
  • Loss run details (10+ vehicles only)
  • Current coverage information (lapse, new venture, <> 1 year of coverage)
  • EIN (if available)

Unacceptable vehicle types

  • GVW > 26k
  • > 15 passenger capacity or paratransit vehicles
  • Emergency use (lights/sirens)
  • Military-type vehicles and vehicles not licensed for on-road
  • Kit cars or gray market vehicles
  • Cargo requiring placard
  • Recreational vehicles or golf carts
  • Vehicles with permanent specialized equipment with value > 25% of vehicle (e.g. lifts/cranes)

Unacceptable business classes

  •  New venture operations
  • Passenger transportation (for-hire or not)
  • For-hire transportation
  • Dirt, sand, and gravel, logging, waste and other high hazard for-hire use classes
  • Towing or roadside assistance operations
  • Residential in-home delivery (including food delivery)
  • Couriers and other package delivery (e.g. Amazon/FedEx contractors)
  • Driving schools
  • Government agencies requiring BMC-91, MCS-90, Form E, Cargo, or any other similar filing
